What Are Tapered Drill Rods?
Tapered drill rods, also known as taper drill rods or tapered drill steel, are rock drilling tools designed to transmit impact energy and rotation from a rock drill to a drill bit. They are commonly used with handheld and air-leg pneumatic rock drills for small-hole drilling in mining, quarrying, tunneling, and construction.
A tapered drill rod typically consists of a shank, a hexagonal hollow steel body, and a tapered connection end. The shank fits into the rock drill, while the tapered end connects to a compatible tapered button bit, cross bit, or chisel bit. Common rod sizes include H19, H22, and H25, with taper angles of 7°, 11°, and 12°.
How Do Tapered Drill Rods Work?
During drilling, the rock drill delivers repeated impacts and rotation through the drill rod to the bit, allowing the cutting elements to break the rock. The tapered connection provides a secure friction fit between the rod and the bit, while the internal flushing hole allows air or water to help remove rock cuttings from the hole.
Unlike integral drill rods, which have a fixed cutting head, tapered drill rods use replaceable drill bits. This allows worn bits to be changed independently without replacing the entire rod, provided the rod remains in serviceable condition.
Key Features of Our Tapered Rods
01 — High-Strength Alloy Steel
Our tapered drill rods are manufactured from alloy steel selected for strength, toughness, and resistance to repeated impact loads. The material helps the rods withstand demanding rock drilling conditions in mining, quarrying, and construction applications.
02 — Steel & Heat Treatment
Appropriate heat treatment helps achieve a balance of surface hardness, core toughness, and fatigue resistance. This is important for reducing premature wear and maintaining reliable performance under repeated drilling impacts.
03 — Precision Taper Connection
The tapered connection is designed to provide a secure fit between the drill rod and a compatible tapered drill bit. Accurate taper dimensions help maintain connection stability and support efficient impact energy transfer during drilling.
04 — Efficient Impact Energy Transfer
The rod’s steel body transmits impact energy and rotation from the rock drill to the drill bit. Proper rod dimensions and compatible connections help minimize energy loss and support consistent rock breaking performance.
05 — Internal Flushing Channel
The hollow drill rod allows compressed air or water to pass through to the drill bit, helping flush rock cuttings out of the borehole. Effective flushing supports smoother drilling and reduces the accumulation of debris around the bit.
06 — Multiple Sizes & Configurations
Available in H19, H22, and H25 hexagonal sizes with 7°, 11°, and 12° taper options. Different rod lengths and shank configurations can be supplied to match specific rock drills and drilling requirements.
APPLICATIONS & EQUIPMENT
Tapered Rods for Different Drilling Applications
Mining
Tapered drill rods are used for blast hole drilling and rock excavation in underground mines. They work with compatible pneumatic rock drills to support drilling operations in various rock formations.
Quarrying
In stone quarries, tapered drill rods are commonly used for drilling blast holes and rock splitting holes. They are suitable for compatible rock drilling equipment used in granite, limestone, and other quarrying operations.
Tunneling
Tapered drill rods are used with suitable rock drills for small-diameter blast holes and other drilling tasks in tunnel excavation. They support rock drilling in confined underground working environments.
Construction & Rock Excavation
For construction projects, tapered drill rods are used in rock breaking, foundation excavation, and road construction. They are suitable for drilling operations where handheld or air-leg rock drills are used.
Compatible Rock Drilling Equipment
Handheld Pneumatic Rock Drills
Tapered rods can be used with compatible handheld pneumatic rock drills for quarrying, construction, and small-hole drilling applications. Common equipment models include Y19A, Y24, and Y26, depending on the drill configuration.
Air-Leg Pneumatic Rock Drills
Tapered rods are widely used with compatible air-leg pneumatic rock drills in underground mining and tunneling. Common models include YT27, YT28, and YT29A, subject to the required shank dimensions and drill configuration.
How to Choose the Right Tapered Rod
01 — Rock Drill Model
Identify the make and model of your rock drill, such as YT28, YT29A, or Y24. Different rock drills may require different shank configurations, so confirming the equipment model is the first step in selecting a compatible tapered rod.
02 — Shank Dimensions
Check the shank size and configuration required by your rock drill, including the hexagonal dimension, shank length, and collar design. For example, H22 × 108 mm is a common shank specification for certain pneumatic rock drills. The shank must match the drill chuck and striking mechanism.
03 — Rod Size
Select the appropriate hexagonal rod size, such as H19, H22, or H25, according to your equipment specifications and drilling conditions. Rod size affects the rod’s cross-sectional dimensions, weight, and mechanical strength. Always verify compatibility with your rock drill.
04 — Taper Angle
Choose a taper angle that matches your tapered drill bit. Common options include 7°, 11°, and 12°. The rod and bit must have compatible taper dimensions to ensure a secure connection and effective impact energy transfer during drilling.
05 — Rod Length
Select the required rod length based on your drilling depth, available working space, and rock drill configuration. When ordering, specify whether the required dimension refers to the overall length or effective length to avoid incorrect specifications.
